Should You Be Looking For A Hard Drive Upgrade?

Most desktop PCs bought or built in the past five years are probably using hard drives in the capacity range of 80 GB to 250 GB. Recent price drops in the hard drive market mean that most current drive generation is more attractive than ever before. You can get 1 TB hard drives for less than $100 now.

Knowing that capacity may not be the only impetus for upgrading your hard drive, we "recreated" a three-year old system with a 200 GB hard drive and looked at what would happen if we replaced the drive with a modern terabyte model.

New Versus Old: We replaced a three-year old 200 GB drive with a new terabyte model.

Capacity Quadrupled, Performance Doubled

It is safe to say that each and every hard drive selling today is far superior to older-generation drives, as improving recording technologies keep pushing forward capacities and performance. Other modifications, such as the interface transition from parallel ATA to Serial ATA 150 (and then 300 MB/s), also make a difference. But no individual feature—even Native Command Queuing or a larger cache—can make as much of a difference as simply stepping up from one drive generation to the next. In fact, the only reason why new hard drives aren’t getting faster to an even greater degree is an increased emphasis on power consumption and drive efficiency.

The bottom line is a simple recommendation that is almost always valid: when it comes time to buy a new hard drive, make sure the one you pick is a latest-generation model.

Capacity Upgrade: Check

The number one reason to purchase a new hard drive for an existing system, undoubtedly, is capacity, since a three-year old 200 GB hard drive fills up fast. In a year, most people typically add at least a few gigabytes of digital pictures, or even more data if video is stored on the drive. Add to that music, new applications, and so on. Unless you don’t touch digital media at all, you might need an additional 50-100 GB capacity per year, and enthusiasts and professionals may easily require far more. Hence, a hard drive replacement or upgrade every few years is absolutely warranted.

Performance Upgrade: Sure?

The next reason for replacing a hard drive would be performance. To illustrate this, we recreated a typical PC system using a Pentium 4 660 processor and a 915G-based motherboard from Asus with 1 GB of RAM; this represents an upper-mainstream system from the 2005-era. We selected a 200 GB Samsung Spinpoint P120 series SATA hard drive and ran several performance and power consumption benchmarks. Then we replayed the benchmark suite using a brand new 1 TB Samsung Spinpoint F2 EcoGreen to measure the difference.

Gigabyte's Radeon HD 4650: Are AGP Graphics Still Good Enough?

Ah, the Accelerated Graphics Port. I remember when AGP first arrived, touted as the PC gamer’s savior.

Prior to 1997, a PC’s graphics card was limited to a measly 133 MB/s of bandwidth. Then came the AGP slot with 266 MB/s, followed by AGP 2x with 533 MB/s, AGP 4x with 1,066 MB/s, and finally AGP 8x with 2,133 MB/s of potential bandwidth. That kind of throughput is respectable, even by today's standards.

Right out of the gate, a first-gen PCI Express (PCIe) x16 slot, with its 4,000 MB/s of bandwidth, didn’t show any appreciable gains over AGP 8x because even the fastest graphics cards didn't saturate the AGP bus. Regardless, AGP was inevitably dropped in favor of the more scalable point-to-point PCIe standard. PCIe not only offered increased throughput, but it also brought with it the ability to transfer more power to ever-hungrier graphics cards.

By PC technology standards, all of this is ancient history. So why bring it up? Ask Gigabyte, one of the few manufacturers that sought to grace the aging AGP bus with a modern graphics processor, designed to save nostalgic gamers from buying a new CPU, motherboard, and graphics subsystem in making the jump to PCIe-based platforms. Its technical designation is the Gigabyte GV-R465D2-1GI, but you’ll probably know it better by its street name, ATI's Radeon HD 4650.

This is an interesting move on Gigabyte's part, as the Radeon HD 4650 isn’t really any faster than the previous king-of-AGP, the Radeon HD 3850. In fact, the older Radeon HD 3850 is probably faster, since it sports a wide 256-bit memory bus (compared to the 4650’s 128-bit bus) and fast DDR3 memory (compared to the 4650’s DDR2 memory). Still, the Radeon HD 4650 does have a few things going for it compared to the Radeon HD 3850, such as more conservative power requirements and two times the texture units.

Who Buys This Stuff?

Sounds great, but who's interested in upgrading ancient tech? Well, 57% of the participants in Valve's Steam Hardware Survey game with dual-core CPUs, while 26% use single-core machines. The most common memory capacity is 2 GB, and the majority of users with processors from AMD game on machines that have clock speeds between 2 and 2.29 GHz. Now, we don't have any specific information about the CPU models folks use, but it's a safe bet that there are a lot of people out there running older rigs.

And who wouldn't want to get more longevity out of an old box? Whether it's your primary gaming machine or just an old PC you keep in the basement, it'd sure be nice to play the newest titles on aged equipment. In fact, I can personally vouch that it's useful to have a spare PC around so a visitor can join in a rousing game of Left 4 Dead. So let's find out if this new Gigabyte GV-R465D2-1GI can breathe some life into one of the great gaming CPUs of antiquity, the Athlon 64 X2 3800+.

G4 recently conducted a follow-up interview with DICE's Gordon Van Dyke, producer of the World War II FPS, Battlefield 1943. Although the game was released as a downloadable title for Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network a month ago, G4 decided to check back in to see Dyke's reaction.

Based on numbers provided by Gamerankings, Battlefield 1943 has received admirable review scores (85-percent average for both platforms) and, according to Dyke, the game has seen much success with the console gamers. Unfortunately, the interview doesn't bring good news for PC gamers wanting their share of the action. If fact, Dyke made it clear that Battlefield 1943 will see a slight delay.

Why the delay? Dyke attributes the setback to the Frostbite engine, as this will be the engine's first PC title. "There are also many different and unique only challenges to the PC that has lead to us pushing the release even further to Q1 CY 2010 [early next year]," he explained. "This was a hard pill to swallow, but it was absolutely needed to ensure the features and functionality that PC players have come to expect from Battlefield on PC are not missing. Things like support for DirectX 9 and 10, higher player count (up to 32-player matches), wide peripheral support i.e. joysticks for flying, VoIP, and ranked server provider hosting. So it was and still is the absolutely right decision, for quality sake, to not release until it is ready."

Battlefield 1943, an online multiplayer World War II first-person shooter, takes place in the Pacific Theater of Operations. The game offers three classes: Infantryman, Rifleman, and Scout, and provides only the Conquest multiplayer mode seen in previous titles.

For console gamers, Battlefield 1943 costs 1200 Microsft points on LIVE, or $14.99 on the PlayStation Network.

PCI Express 3.0 Specs Delayed

According to PC Magazine, the PCI SIG (special interest group) has decided to officially delay the release of the finalized PCI Express 3.0 specification until Q2 2010. Originally, the specs were due to be released this year, with 3.0-enabled products to hit the shelves in 2010. Now, according to the new date, products compliant with the new specs won't be available until 2011.

The PCI SIG said that the delay stemmed from the need to maintain backward compatibility with products based on current standards, namely PCI Express 1.0 and 2.0. "In this particular case, with pushing the technology so hard, and with PCI gen 3 providing so much more capabilities but with the need to be still backwards-compatible, we had to do the diligence required to move the date," said Al Yanes, president of the PCI SIG.

Yanes added that a big portion of the delay was related to verifying products in the lab, making sure that the older devices can function correctly in the new 3.0 slots. The group is taking extra time to ensure that the three frequencies used by PCI Express--2.5 GHz, 5.0 GHz, and the new 8.0 GHz--can support the new encoding schemes (bumped up from 8-bit and 10-bit to 128-bit and 130-bit) on an electrical level.

Although graphics card manufacturers will be mostly affected by the delay, Yanes said that the member companies of the PCI SIG were satisfied with the group's decision.

Blizzard unveiled the latest expansion pack for World of Warcraft (and worst kept secret), Cataclysm.

For many fans following the clues left behind by Blizzard, the revelation of the Cataclysm expansion pack should not have been a surprise when it was officially announced today at BlizzCon 2009. With the domain name registration, and the goblin and worgen masks appearing in a recent PTR build, many fans and websites figured out the basis behind the new expansion as well as the new races walking the demolished lands.

However Blizzard confirmed all the detective work today, revealing that the original "classic" continents of Kalimdor and the Easter Kingdoms have been "reforged" by a cataclysm caused by the corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing. "As the Horde and Alliance race to the epicenter of the cataclysm, the kingdoms of Azeroth will witness seismic shifts in power, the kindling of a war of the elements, and the emergence of unlikely heroes who will rise up to protect their scarred and broken world from utter devastation," reads the press release.

Here's a list of features fans can expect to receive with the new expansion:

Adventure as the cursed worgen with the Alliance or the resourceful goblins with the Horde.

BlizzCon 2009: No Diablo III Date, Consoles

BlizzCon 2009 kicked off earlier today and revealed a few tasty nuggets for StarCraft II and World of WarCraft fans. However, BlizzCon attendees and Diablo III fans discovered a startling truth: Blizzard did not announce any plans to release the action RPG next year. In fact, the company only mentioned the two previously mentioned titles for 2010. Does that mean Diablo III will likely see a 2011 release? It's possible, but we're crossing our fingers that some kind of miracle might happen before then.

But even though Blizzard didn't chisel a definitive release date into stone, the company did provide a few tasty morsels regarding the fourth Diablo III class, the Monk, a character that first made an appearance in the original Diablo's "Hellfire" expansion.

"It's a class that has its roots in old school fantasy, but we believe you haven't seen it quite like this before," said Blizzard's Chris Metzen. "I'm very proud to introduce to you, the new Diablo 3, with all of its open-handed, Tiger-strike packed fury, the Monk."

Blizzard updated the BlizzCon website with new information regarding the Monk class here along with additional details explaining combo moves, runes, monsters, and more monsters. The opening ceremony blog even dictates the following: "Lots of melee, very fast. There's that shielding spell again. Another spell that has the Monk warping from enemy to enemy in a blur. Touch an enemy and it explodes in blood and gore. He does carry some mace/staff thing, so it's not all hand-to-hand like an old-school Monk."

Additionally, Joystiq pointed out that Blizzard COO Paul Sams said that the company hasn't completely ruled out Diablo III for the consoles. "We've met with the major manufacturers, and they've made some pretty compelling arguments," Sams said. While the game is quite possible on the PlayStation 3 given its compatibility with a mouse and keyboard, we're wondering how the game would perform on the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. The last Diablo title to hit the console--namely the original PlayStation-- didn't fare well, mainly because the control scheme didn't work quite so well using the PlayStation controller.

CD-RW/DVD-RW - These drives are standard on almost all notebooks. Obviously the DVD drive is more desirable because it can hold more data and play DVD movies. DVD movie performance will depend on the speed and video performance of the laptop.

Wired and Wireless LAN - All new laptops should have a local area network (LAN) port for plugging into a wired network.
In addition all new notebooks should have wireless network capabilities. New wireless notebooks will be able to use the highest wireless speed available which is termed "wireless N". Some notebooks are still being made with the older wireless B/G capability.

Video Screens - The size, brightness, and clarity of a laptop screen is best shopped for in person. Usually the larger the screen, the heavier the laptop, and the more use of power.

Video Memory and Screen Resolution - The screen resolution of any notebook or desktop computer is a function of the graphics adapter, amount of Video RAM available, the size (pixel density) of the screen shown (e.g. 640x480), and the number of colors used. These screen features are loosely defined by the type of output the screen can produce e.g. VGA, SVGA, XGA, and SXGA as shown in the table on the next page.

Forward - The purpose of this article is to provide you with unbiased information for your laptop/notebook computer buying decisions. We've tried to make this guide easy to read and informative, however it also includes detailed technical information for the more advanced reader.

This guide is divided into several different chapters which include: what to consider before purchasing a laptop or notebook computer, recommended laptop features, an explanation of laptop video memory and how it effects screen resolution, a notebook CPU speed index guide, details on the mobile CPUs that are in the speed index, hints on buying a laptop, and a list of other laptop/notebook computer resources.

What to Consider Before Purchasing a Laptop Computer

1. Portability - The main reason to have a laptop or notebook computer is portability - the need to take your entire computer from one place to another. If you don't need portability, then you should probably buy a desktop. Or if you really need portability but don't want the weight and size of a laptop, a well equipped cell phone/pda might be a good choice. Laptops come in all diferent weights, sizes, and speeds.

2. Expense - Laptop computers cost almost twice as much as comparably equipped desktops. Shocking isn't it?
You can actually buy two comparably equipped desktops for the price of one laptop. So if you have to have a computer in two separate places, you would be better off with two desktops (if they were reasonably close together you could hook them together in a wired or wireless local area network (LAN).

3. Speed - Laptops are 30-100% slower than a desktop with the same features (CPU, RAM, hard drive capacity, etc.). Slower CPUs, motherboards, hard drives, and video systems all contribute to the speed loss.

4. Upgradeability - Laptop computers are mostly non-upgradeable. Whatever CPU, video card (built into the motherboard), sound card (also built-in), and screen, that come with the laptop are the same parts the laptop will end with.
While it is possible to upgrade main memory, hard drives, and sometimes CPUs, these upgrades can be expensive.

You can also upgrade newer laptops through their USB, USB 2.0, and Firewire ports. Only USB 2.0 and Firewire ports can run high speed devices e.g. hard drives and DVD drives. While much improvement has been made in the speed and price of external drives, upgrading a laptop this way adds weight and decreases portability.
(However, it is a very good idea to back up all your important files to a CD, DVD, external hard drive, web storage etc. at least once a week. - ed)

5. Serious Gaming. You will need to spend at least $2,000 - $2,500 for a laptop that can play current games at a respectable speed. I don't recommend laptops for serious gaming no matter how much you are willing to spend. Why?

Because if you love to play games, about 1-1.5 years after you purchase your laptop you will find it isn't fast enough to keep up with the latest new game. At that time, you will regret buying a gaming laptop. However, if you have the money, and want to throw down $2500 every year or so, more power to you.

On the other hand, if your computer budget is limited, it's better to have a functional laptop, and spend your gaming dollars on an upgradeable desktop.

In WorldBench 6, the Timeline trounced the Pavilion dv2 (which scored a 46) and outpaced the MSI X340 (which earned a 56), notching a mark of 68. That's the kind of score we've seen from some typically expensive ultraportables--but in this case, you're paying only $799. While this machine manages to outrun similar competitors for the price with a U9400 CPU and 4GB of RAM, it lacks a discrete graphics card. As a result, though the Timeline surprisingly sails through 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium, you shouldn't expect it to be a multimedia marvel. It does, however, hang in for a ridiculously long stretch of time--it lasted about 8 hours, 21 minutes on a single charge in our tests. That's a pretty solid run, and that battery life was one of the things that helped push the Timeline ahead of the X340 in our evaluations.

But where do you peg a portable like this? Is it a high-powered tweener, or is it a low-performance ultraportable on the cheap? That depends on whom you ask. The dv2 stretches the definition of a netbook. The X340 is a slim, plasticky, poor-man's MacBook Air. The Timeline is a sleek, solid notebook, but it's the size of a conventional ultraportable. Measuring 12.67 by 1.13 by 8.97 inches and weighing 3.5 pounds, this system could be easily confused with a traditional laptop.

Now, the layout of the Timeline--namely, the keyboard--might prompt some love-hate reactions. For an advanced hunt-and-peck specialist like myself, the keys feel springy and good to the touch. But the flat, seemingly floating, psuedo cut-out keys aren't suitable for everyone. Say you're munching on snacks while typing (this review brought to you by Cheetos)--grit and debris will quickly, easily, and frequently fall between the buttons. And my editorial partner in crime, Melissa Perenson, was quick to point out that anyone with long fingernails will find their fingertips catching underneath the keys. Does that mean you'll break a nail every time you type or try to wedge up a key? I don't know, but folks in need of a manicure should consider themselves warned.

Among the Timeline's handy and unique features are a couple of touch-inducive shortcuts. A Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n toggle sits next to a shortcut to Acer Backup Manager (an easy-to-use software utility) and a quick toggle for a battery-saving mod.

Camping below all that is a good-sized touchpad. It has the same texture as the wrist rest, and the only indicator that you're in the strike zone is a slight speed bump surrounding the area. The mouse-button bar has an odd lip that your finger can slip into so that your thumb can rest while you navigate. I'm not particularly crazy about the cheap plastic feel of both the wrist rest and the button, but the setup certainly gets the job done. I know it's an entirely different class, but I wish that more portable makers would take a cue from the Asus Eee PC 1008HA, which has golf-ball-like dimples dotting the active touchpad area. And metallic buttons on the Timeline wouldn't hurt, either.

The screen is nice--provided that you use the Timeline only indoors. The glossy 1366-by-768-pixel panel has colors that pop. If you saw this system on a store shelf, you'd be drawn in by the rich reds and blues that don't drown each other out. Try typing on it outside, however, and you're looking into a fairly expensive mirror. It's not exactly unusable--I wrote half this review outdoors. But the display is extremely dim, and making out much more than black text on a white background under broad daylight is hard. In short, it's just the continuing curse of the glossy screen coating.

Judging from its size and shape, the Timeline seems capable of accommodating an internal optical drive. But it doesn't. What it does have, however, are a reasonable number of ports. VGA and HDMI video-outs complement three USB plugs, an RJ-45 ethernet port, a Webcam, and headphone and microphone jacks.

As for the software, yes, you get some of the usual trialware (Microsoft Office, for instance). However, Acer has also thrown some helpful applications into the mix, ones that might be worth your while to try. Beyond Office, you get Microsoft Works, the eSobi news reader, the aforementioned backup utility, MyWinLocker for safely stowing files, and Orion, a soup-to-nuts IM/communication client. Oh, yeah--you'll also find a host of obnoxious casual-game demos in the "Acer GameZone" that you'll probably want to uninstall the second you power the Timeline up.

Overall, the Acer Aspire 3810T is a handsome-looking portable masquerading as something more powerful than it truly is--and that could be a bit of a problem for this slightly oversized netbook. The large, comfortable keys and the 13.3-inch screen could lull you into thinking that this portable is mighty. It is, by netbook standards--but that's about it. That said, the Timeline is a pretty solid deal, and a decent-looking machine.

Looking at the performance differences between the new 13-inch 2.26GHz MacBook Pro and the lowest-priced Mac laptop, the $999 2.13GHz white MacBook, we find a Speedmark improvement of 7.5 percent with the 2.26GHz MacBook Pro. The 2.26GHz model also had better frame rates in 3D games, thanks to the faster memory that the MacBook Pro uses; the white MacBook has 800MHz DDR2 memory, while the 2.26GHz MacBook Pro uses 1066MHz DDR3 RAM.

The most interesting benchmark comparison is between the 13-inch, 2.53GHz MacBook Pro and the 15-inch, 2.53GHz MacBook Pro. These laptops had a less than 1 percent difference in their Speedmark scores, and their specifications are nearly identical. The $200 price difference between the two buys just buys you an additional 2 inches diagonal of screen real estate.

You can't swap out the new built-in lithium polymer battery, but Apple's hoping you never need to--our tests show that the new battery lasts longer per charge than the removable battery found in the previous generation of MacBooks.

In Macworld's battery life test, we play on a continuous loop a movie ripped from a DVD and saved to the internal hard drive. The movie is played at full screen and full brightness, with the keyboard illumination turned all the way down and AirPort turned off. The new 13-inch MacBooks lasted about 48 minutes longer than the older aluminum MacBook, and about 10 minutes longer than the current 2.13GHz white MacBook. If you compare the battery life of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with that of its 15-inch siblings, you'll find that the larger batteries in the 15-inch models give the laptop 30 more minutes of playback power.Running PC World's battery tests, we only managed to squeeze three hours, 50 minutes out of the high-end 13-incher.

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro models can handle up to 8GB of memory. To upgrade the RAM in the 2.26GHz model, which comes with just 2GB of RAM in its standard configuration, Apple charges an extra $100 for 4GB (a pair of 2GB modules) and $1100 for 8GB (a pair of 4GB modules). The 2.53GHz model, which ships with 4GB of RAM, can be purchased with the optional 8GB of memory for an additional $1000. Third-party companies will sell you compatible memory for less; OWC, for example, sells an 8GB kit for $635, but you have to install the RAM yourself.

Unfortunately, Apple won't sell a MacBook Pro without RAM, or even let you configure a 2.53GHz laptop with less than 4GB, so if you do decide to use after-market memory, know that you'll end up replacing the stock memory with the upgrade, and you'll have two extra of sticks of RAM. OWC has a memory trade-in program that will help to offset the cost of the upgrade a little.

You can also configure your MacBook Pro with a different hard drive. For an additional $50, you can outfit the 2.26GHz model with a 250GB hard drive. A 320GB drive is $100, and a 500GB drive costs $200. (All of the hard-drive upgrades spin at 5400 rpm.)

Apple also offers two solid-state drive (SSD) options and charges $400 for a 128GB SSD or $850 for a 256GB SSD. Each option costs $50 less on the 2.56GHz model.

Processor upgrades are not an option on the 13-inch MacBook Pros, and Apple offers only optional 7200-rpm hard drives on the 15-inch and 17-inch Macbook Pro models. Apple considers the memory and hard drive to be user-serviceable parts, so there's nothing stopping you from buying one from a third party and installing it yourself.

With its lower price, the return of FireWire (woo-hoo!), a better-looking display, and a new built-in SD Card slot that you can boot from, the newest member of the MacBook Pro makes an impressive debut. But check back and we'll update this story with a full review as soon as we get results from the PC World Test Center.

Toshiba's NB205 is a great value, packed with a collection of fantastic features and a marathon-ready battery life.

Toshiba may be new to netbooks, but the company is no stranger to small. Toshiba's NB205-N310 ($400) jumps into the market and claims a top spot in our rankings. This primo portable not only delivers where it counts with the longest battery life to date, it does so with panache and some great design decisions. In short, Toshiba has come a long way since blazing trails with its Libretto subnotebooks in the 1990s.

I'm going to start this review with the NB205's only real "downer": its pedestrian speed and guts. The guts are a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 160GB 5400-rpm hard drive, which together earned the NB205 a rather standard performance score of 36 in PC WorldBench 6. But that's about the only thing that I'd classify as "average" about the NB205-N310.

Toshiba spokespeople say that the NB205-N310's six-cell battery can last for almost 9 hours. Wrong. In our tests, the NB205 survives a staggering 9 hours, 53 minutes. For a little perspective, that is easily the longest time so far that a netbook has been able to run--and this is with the standard battery on board. That alone catapults this netbook's worth to a top pick on the charts.

A killer keyboard and a touchpad to match are essential for a champion netbook. After all, how useful is a machine if you can't type on it without hurting your hands? Toshiba scores by making the Chiclet-size cutout keys just big enough, and by dropping down a huge touchpad. This is simply the best netbook mouse pad to date. For starters, the surface area of the strike zone is larger than that on many full-size laptops! Next, the beefy mouse buttons camp at the southern edge of the machine--easing hand strain. My physical therapist would approve.

The N310 has good (though occasionally muted) color reproduction and supports a reasonably precise resolution of 1024 by 600 pixels on its glossy 10.1-inch screen. I noticed some dark spots that got washed into a splotch or two--but otherwise, the images looked plenty sharp.

Its configuration looks fairly standard on the surface: three USB ports, an SDHC card reader, a Webcam, one VGA-out, ethernet, and headphone and microphone jacks. But it's put together in a 2.9-pound package and with a sense of style that doesn't look or feel cheap at all.

Toshiba also adds a few extras to the NB205-N310 that are sure to appeal to folks on the go--and even more so to IT departments looking to deploy cheap PCs to a mobile workforce. One notable perk is a pass-through USB port that enables users to charge USB-powered devices while the computer is off. This netbook also provides an internal accelerometer to protect the hard drive in case of falls (much as the HP Mini 2140 does)--and it offers wireless WAN support as an option.

As a quick heads-up, another version of the NB205 is waiting in the wings--the lighter, scrappier NB205-N210. The big differences between these sibling Toshiba netbooks boil down to price (the N210 costs $350, $50 less than the N310), key shape (the N210 has flat, wide keys, as opposed to the N310's cut-out style), and the N310's bluetooth support (the N210 doesn't have it).

But considering all the features packed into the N310--and how well it performs in a pinch--this is an easy-to-recommend netbook that's perfect whether you are a budget-minded businessman or you just need a flexible minimachine for a long day of note-taking. If this netbook ponied up a little more horsepower (a discrete GPU wouldn't hurt), I'd probably use this as my go-to gadget.

Elonex Websurfer

The Websurfer has been recently launched by Elonex but isn't entirely new -- the Via NanoBook chassis on which it's based was first seen at Computex in 2007, and various rebadged models have been available since then. The difference now is the price. While those early models were selling for a silly £500, the Websurfer is available online for around only £150, which perhaps explains why it's a top seller at many online stores.

Solid build quality
The Websurfer is essentially an alternative approach to the portable problem first solved by the Asus Eee PC 701. Both models are a similar size and weight. Both also have a 7-inch screen, but the Websurfer's sits off-centre in a lid that's raised on two tall hinges. The arrangement looks very peculiar, but it at least puts the screen at a more comfortable viewing position than you get with other small-screen netbooks.

The lid folds well beyond 180°, but the base is heavy enough to prevent the Websurfer tipping over when the display's fully tilted. When closed, the widely spaced hinges leave a gap for the angled top edge of the battery to poke through, and this makes a convenient carrying handle. The lid itself is chunky and reassuringly solid. In fact, the whole plastic case feels very well-made and able to withstand being knocked about in a bag.

The off-centre screen leaves plenty of empty space on the right-hand side. Elonex has chosen to fill this slot with a small, rechargeable, wireless VoIP phone. That is, we suppose, handier than carrying around a separate headset.

Cramped keyboard
As with the 701, the Websurfer has a keyboard that's best described as 'adequate'. Children will find the tiny, cramped keys comfortable to use, but few adults will find the keyboard comfortable enough for prolonged typing.

The keyboard sits towards the front of the Websurfer's base too, leaving little room for a trackpad. The Websurfer does have one, but it measures just 19 by 13mm, with an equally shrunken button on either side. You'll need to swipe several times to move the mouse pointer from one side of the screen to the other, but the trackpad works better than you might think, although we'd still prefer a standard-size pad.

Should the tiny trackpad prove too small, the Websurfer is available with a touch-sensitive screen for an extra £40 or so. Since the screen can't be folded back to turn the Websurfer into a tablet, this isn't really that useful, particularly since a standard version of Windows XP Home is supplied.

Like the 701, the Websurfer's 7-inch screen has a low native resolution of 800x480 pixels, but this can be artificially increased to 1,024x768 using the display driver. This makes it far less legible, but it's fine for temporary use, such as when you need to fit a tall dialogue box on the screen. A DVI port also means than an external monitor can be connected, although the provision of just two USB ports means you'll need a USB hub if you want to connect more than an external mouse and keyboard for more comfortable desktop use.

No powerhouse
As you might expect from its 1.2GHz VIA C7-M processor, the Websurfer isn't the speediest machine around, taking a good 2 minutes to boot from cold. In the PCMark05 benchmark test, the Websurfer achieved a lowly score of 583. It feels snappy enough for Web surfing and other general-purpose productivity tasks, though.

The base got rather warm during our benchmarks tests, but the Websurfer is unlikely to be pushed so hard in day-to-day use. Annoyingly, the tiny cooling fan has a habit of spinning up and down every few seconds, even when the Websurfer's idling, and it's distractingly loud at its highest RPM.

In Battery Eater's intensive Classic test, the Websurfer's battery lasted almost exactly 2 hours, while it lasted 3 hours and 53 minutes in the less intensive Reader's test. That's pretty average.

Conclusion
Given how cheap it is, it's easy to see why the Elonex Websurfer is so popular, but, like any similarly sized netbook, it's not ideal as a main computer. It's a fine first computer for kids, though, and a perfect portable machine for anyone who doesn't want the power or price of a larger netbook.

Lenovo IdeaPad S12

When we first heard that Lenovo had an IdeaPad S12 netbook on the way, we were expecting the long-anticipated Nvidia Ion-packing version, including graphics power decent enough to handle high-definition video and even some demanding gaming. Unfortunately, Lenovo contacted us to say that this model won't be coming to Europe. Instead, we got a configuration that includes an Intel Atom N270 processor and GMA 950 graphics -- essentially the same configuration as many current netbooks.

The S12 does, however, have a 12-inch screen and full keyboard, giving this netbook more of a laptop feel. Just don't expect more than a larger version of the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 netbook. The £340 S12 is a good compromise between a laptop and a netbook, but thin-and-light laptops with ultra-low-voltage processors, such as the Acer Aspire Timeline 3810T and MSI X340, give much more bang for your buck, although they're substantially more expensive.

Netbook in laptop's clothing
From a design standpoint, the S12, which is available in black or white, looks like a larger brother of the recent S10-2. Compact and well-proportioned, the outer matte-black plastic case is topped with a glossy plastic lid patterned with subtle polka dots. It's a smudge magnet, but it's attractive.

Inside, smooth matte-black plastic surrounds the keyboard, while the 12.1-inch glossy screen is surrounded by similarly glossy plastic. The S12 looks professional and stylishly austere -- not unlike a Lenovo ThinkPad. The full keyboard feels great, and the touchpad is an improvement on the S10-2's in terms of size. The S12 feels like a real laptop.

Entry-level desktop-replacement laptops are almost as popular as netbooks in many online stores' bestseller lists. The appeal of models like those in Toshiba's Satellite L350 series lies in their size. Big screens and keyboards make them no less usable than a desktop PC, but they can still be carried around and hidden away when not in use.

Here we review the mid-range Toshiba Satellite L350-17P, which is available for around £430. The low-end L350-21Q is available for around £400, and the high-end L350-21T costs about £480.

Big bruiser
Like any 17-inch laptop, the L350-17P is something of a bruiser, but its boring design makes it look even more monolithic than some similarly sized competitors. The only adornments on the dark grey case are the light grey, painted Toshiba logos on the lid and below the screen. We should, perhaps, be thankful for the lack of tacky silver plastic and blue LEDs that some manufacturers like to use.

The case feels sturdy and, at 3.15kg, rather heavy -- and that's not counting the external power adaptor. There's plenty of flex in the lid, and the hinges, although stiff, do allow for a fair amount of wobbling. These, however, aren't really problems for a laptop that won't be used on the move. Four large rubber feet keep the L350-17P planted on a desktop, but a large air intake on the underside needs to be kept clear if the laptop is used on anything other than an even surface.

It's not particularly beautiful, but the L350-17P's design does the job

A big case means there's room for a large keyboard. The L350-17P's is full-size, with a separate numeric keypad. The keyboard is set well back in the case, with a wide wrist rest, but, while comfortable to type on, it does feel rather cheap and insubstantial. One pleasing touch is that there's some breathing room between the main keyboard and both the numeric keypad and function keys. Many other laptops -- even ones this size -- simply cram them all together.

Keyboard aside, the other obvious attraction with a 17-inch laptop is the large screen. The L350-17P's display is clear and bright, but the 1,440x900-pixel resolution is on the low side for such a big screen. The glossy finish helps create good contrast, but it means that you can see your own face when watching darker scenes in movies. That problem isn't unique to this laptop, though.

Although hardly hi-fi, the sound quality of the two speakers that sit below the screen is acceptable enough for the usual Windows Vista noises and the odd music track or movie. One audio annoyance, however, is that the rotary volume control on the front of the laptop lacks end stops -- it just turns and turns and turns. Since there's no on-screen volume indicator either, this makes it tricky to know how loud the sound is set until you hear it.

Weak GPU
The 2.16GHz Pentium T3400 processor is one of Intel's budget mobile offerings, but it's still a dual-core chip. It managed to propel the L350-17P to a PCMark05 benchmark score of 4,161, which isn't too far behind what a Core 2 Duo CPU of a similar speed would achieve.

The option to have a max of 4 years on-site service warranty is offered through an update of the device made in several steps, up to the 4 years mentioned above. Current price for this options availability is 209.00 Euros. From time to time though, Dell provides special offers in the warranty system, an upgrading being accessible for less or even without surcharge. The new Dell Studio 15 notebook …55 comes with a lot of options for which unfortunately customers are charge, or better said surcharged!

PSPOP3 Inspector offers to you a preview possibility for your POP3 accounts, as well as the possibility to delete "bad emails" direct on the server. With the program you spare traffic, delete viruses, worms and spam emails directly on the server and avoid that dangerous code lands on your PC!

Thanks to threaded architecture (Multi Threading) the program is not only robustly and stable, but also very fast and is in the best way suitable for the work with many POP3 accounts. It convinces in speed and clarity. Thus, different POP3 accounts and there situated mails is not only grouped/hierarchically represented, but can improve the overview additionally with a color markers. With the receiving of the email headers from server, the program analyzes these and improves the overview once again - emails will be marked with different classification symbols.

You have the possibility to administrate white and black lists. To it you can add senders and recipient addresses, as well as subject or parts of the subject. Emails, which were assigned to the white list during examination, will be handled with double safety, in order not coincidentally to be deleted on the server.

It logs carefully all deletion processes. Headers of the deleted emails are stored in the local database of the program. Via statistics function you can access this database and use different search functionalities.

By the way, we know that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that on Dajjal's forehead will be written the word "KAAFIR" in arabic but i don't see so. The child's deformity could be as a result of mutation. Allah knows best. According to the authentic hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Ad-Dajjal was there during his time and Ad- Dajjal is alive now and he is on the Earth but we do not know where he is. Hence Ad-dajjal is not a person who will be born; he is already living. I will post the hadiths later if I can inshaAllah.
